Dollar steady ahead of Powell testimony, bitcoin takes breather

The U.S. dollar was largely steady on Wednesday, as traders avoided making large bets ahead of congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, as well as the European Central Bank's, or ECB, rate decision and U.S. jobs data later this week. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin was slightly up but stayed below a record high reached in a volatile overnight session. Powell is expected to reinforce that the Fed will wait for more data before making any rate cuts. Elsewhere, the ECB is widely expected to leave interest rates at a record 4% at its policy meeting on Thursday. Markets are also keeping a close eye on the world's largest cryptocurrency, bitcoin , after it surged to a record high overnight before retreating sharply.

Oil and natural gas producer Coterra Energy (CTRA) delivered strong results Monday after closing bell, including beating expectations where it matters most: free cash flow. Bottom line All line items are important, but it's free cash flow that supports cash returns to shareholders. But it's important to remember that cash flow is a function of energy prices, and is therefore largely out of management's control. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's biggest brewing firm, on Tuesday beat expectations for the third quarter, despite an ongoing drag from controversy surrounding its online Bud Light campaign. Revenue rose 5% over the period to $15.57 billion, ahead of a company-compiled forecast of 4.7%. However, Bud Light — which lost its spot as the top-selling U.S. beer over the summer amid a conservative-led boycott, protesting its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney — weighed on U.S. performance, the company said. It marks the second quarter in which the Bud Light controversy, which includes criticism of the company for failing to support Mulvaney amid the backlash, has hit U.S. sales. Analysts at RBC Europe said the company's performance stood out within a "turbulent quarter" for earnings, noting beats on organic revenue growth and EDITDA growth expectations, despite a North America sales miss.

Today’s Turkey, however, is starkly different from the secular, Westernized state envisioned by Ataturk 100 years ago. The Turkish republic as imagined by Ataturk was firmly rooted in the West and a quick succession of reforms sought to modernize a population decimated by war. People often express such justification through religion, Murat Somer, a professor of political science at Ozyegin University in Istanbul, told CNN. What Ataturk may have been most proud of in today’s Turkey, however, is its growing influence on the world stage, analysts say. In 1926, after an assassination plot against him was discovered, Ataturk told his new nation: “One day my mortal body will turn to dust, but the Turkish republic will stand forever.”

From this tangle of overly serious criticism and brand interference, the idea of “girl math” stretched far past its original intent. The Fed on Wednesday held key interest rates unchanged as widely expected, but warned that the battle against inflation was far from over. Eli Lilly not only reported a stellar second quarter, management was able to raise its full-year sales and adjusted earnings outlook as well. Though revenues were a tad short, earnings results were better than expected on a both a HAAP and adjusted basis. Constellation Brands' (STZ) sales and earnings results outpaced expectations. DuPont (DD) reported a good quarter prior to us initiating a position in the name. Market reactions to Powell speech

"It is the Fed's job to bring inflation down to our 2% goal, and we will do so," Powell said. "August has been a difficult month for the market, so it is hungry for news that will help reverse the trend. Investors are hanging on to every word, but the main takeaway is that Powell signaled that the Fed would raise rates if needed. Rather than last year's short but brutal speech, Powell opted for a longer and calmer speech. KARL SCHAMOTTA, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, CORPAY, TORONTO"On balance, this is a modestly less hawkish speech than markets had feared.

CNN —Artificial intelligence darling Nvidia’s upcoming earnings report could be a boost or a drag on a market already mired in the summer doldrums. Nvidia reached a $1 trillion market cap in May, becoming the ninth company to achieve that milestone. Tech stocks rose on Monday, indicating optimism among investors about Nvidia’s earnings. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index on Monday gained 1.6%, marking its biggest one-day jump this month and stalling the recent sell-off in tech stocks. Tech stocks faltered somewhat on Tuesday, as weak retail earnings and elevated Treasury yields put pressure on stocks.

Top Chinese envoy to visit Ukraine, Russia on 'peace' mission
  + stars: | 2023-05-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
BEIJING, May 15 (Reuters) - A top Chinese envoy will begin a tour of Ukraine, Russia and other European cities on Monday in a trip Beijing says is aimed at discussing a "political settlement" to the Ukraine crisis. "The visit ... is a testament to China's efforts towards promoting peace talks, and fully demonstrates China's firm commitment to peace," foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a daily briefing. He is the most senior Chinese official to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, and his trip could coincide with the beginnings of a long anticipated counteroffensive by Ukraine to recapture territory seized by Russia. Ukraine is scheduled to be Li's first stop on his trip, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The visit comes weeks after Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy in late April, in the first talks between the two leaders since the war began.

China says Ukraine crisis driven by 'invisible hand'
  + stars: | 2023-03-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BEIJING, March 7 (Reuters) - The Ukraine crisis seems to be driven by an invisible hand pushing for the protraction and escalation of the conflict, China's foreign minister Qin Gang said on Tuesday. The "invisible hand" is "using the Ukraine crisis to serve certain geopolitical agendas", Qin said on the sidelines of an annual parliament meeting in Beijing, calling for dialogue to begin as soon as possible. Qin also said Beijing has not provided weapons to either side of the Ukraine conflict, amid loud warnings from U.S. officials on unspecified "consequences" for China, should it send lethal aid to Russia. "(China) is not a party to the crisis and has not provided weapons to either side of the conflict. So on what basis is this talk of blame, sanctions and threats against China?
Feb 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden told ABC News in an interview on Friday that the idea China would be negotiating the outcome of the Ukraine war was not rational, following the release of Beijing's peace plan for the conflict. Biden told ABC News on the one-year anniversary of the war. "The idea that China is going to be negotiating the outcome of a war that's a totally unjust war for Ukraine is just not rational." Biden also repeated comments that he would not be sending F-16s to Ukraine for now, saying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not need the fighter jets for the moment. Emerson Electric (EMR) reported disappointing quarterly results on Wednesday, pushing shares of the technology and engineering company down 5% and forcing a downgrade on our newest holding. As a result, we are putting Emerson Electric in the "penalty box" and downgrading shares to a 2 rating from a 1. A penalty box means the stock has one quarter to show improvement — and should it fail to do so, it gets booted from the portfolio. Geographically, sales growth was driven by the Americas, which was up 13% versus the year-ago period. On the other hand, the earnings-per-share guide, which along with underlying sales growth is in line with the guidance previously provided, came in a penny short at the midpoint.
Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas cut his price target on Tesla to $250 per share from $330, citing weaker demand for electric vehicles, but kept his overweight weighting on the stock. Tesla's stock is down 68% year to date, and 42% in December alone. Tesla appears to be responding to the weaker demand by slowing the rollout of its cars. However, the weaker market for electric vehicles is a bigger threat to Tesla's competitors than Musk's company, Jonas said. "On a relative basis, the reiteration of our OW rating must be seen vs. more challenged EV-related peers such as EW-rated Fisker (FSR), UW-rated Lucid (LCID), and UW-rated QuantumScape (QS)," Jonas wrote.
